The watch was released October 10, 1999 by GSX which is a Japanese watch brand founded in 1975. Their watches are only sold in Japan so they are not easy to find. GSX has been well know to have watches produced with tie-ins to movies or video games. This watch was part of a 500 limited run produced to celebrate Luc Bessons Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue) film that was released in 1988. The double domed mineral crystal has a tiny scratch near 4 oclock but no chips/cracks. You can appreciate the beautiful deep blue starlight dial with unique light orange lume hour marks and super cool dolphin label. Lume still medium strength despite age. The in-house Japanese designed beadblasted stainless case and integrated bracelet are in good shape with no significant dings on the blue rimmed bezel; cool inscription on the left case. The tapered bracelet style is quite reminiscent of the Seiko VANAC 5246-6040 and rare Grand Seiko 6185-8010 palladium V.F.A. The holographic exhibition caseback shows off the highly desirable 4S15A movement. Cal. 4S15 has an incredible pedigree - it was revived from - the chronometer grade Cal. 52 movement family used in the King Seiko Special series when Seiko needed to restart mechanical watch production after they dominated the prior decade and a half with quartz. 4S15 features a Hi-Beat 28,8000 beats per hour movement with date complication, manual winding, hacking and quickset - one quirk of the movement is the handwinding function still is activated with quickset so it does take some effort on the crown to change the date. Unsigned tapered crown in good shape and all functions work including quickset date. Movement looks clean and the watch is keeping good time; however, given the more the 20 year age, service recommended for daily use. Water resistance is 100mm but the watch has not be pressure tested. The bracelet is sized for a 7.5 inch wrist with no extra microadjustments; there are 2 extra links for a full bracelet set. Since this was sold for the Japanese market, I would estimate the bracelet would max out at 8.25 inches; please check your wrist size. You also get the GSX900 Le Grand Blue signed cardboard display box with cool foam inserts along with the original sales tag (55,000 Yen retail price) and 4S15 manual. For those that desire a Cal. 4S15 Seiko watch (used in the modern vintage classical like the mechanical SUS and Red Alpinists), only a few know that some 4S15 movements were provided to GSX for their watches. One of only 2500 Limited edition Seiko Presage shippo enamel dials with a beautiful sunburst pattern. This was released in 2018 in a limited production run of 2500 and is no longer available. Shippo glazing is done by hand by master craftsmen. The sunbust pattern is created by the old age method of guilloche engraving. The result is a beautiful deep blue face that is mesmerizing as it catches the light. It runs on a Seiko automatic Calibre 6R15, which can be viewed through the sapphire crystal caseback.
